Vacation with a Folkie

Jory Nash  April 22, 2012   3:00 PM & 6:00 PM    $20

Jory Nash is an award-winning singer-songwriter and storyteller who blends elements of folk, jazz, blues, pop & soul into an original stew of sound. He has recorded 6 critically acclaimed albums, including his newest CD “New Blue Day”, which was named the Penguin Eggs Magazine 2009 Critic’s Choice Album of the Year (Penguin Eggs is Canada’s premier Folk, Roots & World Music Magazine). New Blue Day was also nominated for a 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award. We were proud to be able to twice present Jory along with Aengus Finnan and Terry Tufts in their award winning show "The Way We Feel"---the music of Gordon Lightfoot. Jory is one of those great Canadian singer songwriters who knows not only how to write and sing a powerful song, but also how to tell a great story. It will be a huge treat to welcome Jory back here to the cabin. Jory's website includes lots of song samples.

Butch Hancock  May 27, 2012   4:00 PM & 7:00 PM    $25
Please note different showtimes

Butch has truly been our white whale. We've pursued Butch forevery one of the nearly 17 years we've been presenting shows here. Toour way of thinking Butch is the absolute master of the story song andtruly one of the greatest writers to ever come out of the ridiculouslyfertile school of songwriters that call Texas home. Like the band thathe's a part of when they decide to do something---TheFlatlanders---Butch is almost more a legend than a singer too. A true renaissance man, Butch started his creative life as an Architecture major at Texas Tech. Though he never completed his studies, that set him on a career path that has led from one creative endeavor to the next. An award winning photographer as well as a singer-songwriter, it is his musical career that has led many to, like us, acclaim him as one of Texas' finest writers. It's almost impossible to catalog the highlights of this troubadours' career. His discography arguably contains more than 20 albums. One of his career highlights would certainly have to be the time he played six nights in a row at the Cactus Cafe in Austin and didn't repeat one song in the entire six night run!! Butch truly defines the term "prolific". His tunes can go straight to the heart or the funny bone with equal ease. His most recent cd, War and Peace, is a not so subtle look at the startling mess we find ourselves in here today---and examines lots of the reasons why we may have gotten where we are. Despite obvious touches of Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, and a healthy dose of many more of the more renowned singers of our time, Butch is truly one of a kind. This Texas original ventures up this way VERY infrequently---we urge you to come out and join us in an afternoon of music we are positive you'll never forget.

Garnet Rogers September 30, 2012 3PM & 6PM $25

Those of you up on your geography will note a pattern here----yup----another Canadian coming down to grace our tiny log cabin. The fact is, we've hardly ever heard a Canadian singer songwriter that didn't REALLY make us sit up and take notice, and Jory and Garnet are two of the very best. Garnet began his career singing with his late brother, the legendary Stan Rogers. To our way of thinking, Garnet has certainly gone on to carve out a career that is every bit as impressive as what Stan accomplished while he was here. One of the most powerful singers you're ever liable to hear, Garnet is also one of the great champions of the underdog and those seemingly without a voice. Never one to back down from a fight, Garnet takes on society's ills with a clarity of vision that is breathtaking. This probably wouldn't be the show for all you Tea Partiers to attend---but everyone else (you know who you are) will, we feel, love Garnet and want to join us for this one. Garnet has a great website, including lots of song samples, here: http://www.garnetrogers.com/index.shtml
